“Sisters of the Wild Sage in a wonderful collection of stories set in New Mexico. It’s called a weird western collection, but if that turns you away, give it a try. There are very few tropes or clichés of the “old west” in these stories. They are instead snippets of the lives of characters with depth, power, emotion, and life. The stories range from modern day to the late 19th/early 20th century. Some are sublime and heartwarming, some are terrifying. This is paranormal at its best, haunting and enchanting. And for those disinclined to fantasy stories, this collection provides an invitation to magical realism that you might find appealing. The overwhelming majority of the characters are women, and those from the marginalized edges of society (still today). The characters are wonderfully complex. There are few villains in black hats or heroes in white. Kurtz breathed life into the characters, marked with flaws and failures. These stories are the ones that rarely get told, and the reading world is lesser for it.” –Bishop O’Connell
